About

Beverly Farms Parents:   If you are interested in registering for our STEM classes this fall, please add your child to our wait list!  We hope to open another section in November.

The Great Adventure Lab (formerly Adventures with Robots) is an after-school science enrichment program that runs in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids, how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). We also teach science, engineering, electronics ... and more! We do it all with SMALL class sizes (adult-student ratio = 6:1). Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistibly FUN for the next generation.

You can read all about our classes and birthday parties at http://thegreatadventurelab.com. The site includes plenty of photos and links to videos from our classes!

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, Md. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

Five- to six-year-olds! We know you’re ready to learn engineering concepts, too! Using LEGO® DUPLO Simple Machines Education kit designed for ages 5+, we’ll learn mechanical concepts by building seesaws, spinning tops and more!

GRADES K-1  Mondays 3:30-4:30pm

Session 2: Oct 28, Nov 4, 18, 25, Dec 2, 9, 16

LET’S ROLL! ENGINEERS  (AKA Early Engineers 2)

Using LEGO® DUPLO Tech Machines Education kit designed for ages 5+, we’ll start each class with brief story-based challenge - and then use tools to build our own vehicular solutions. We'll  also extend each lesson with real-life applications of the concepts we cover while building! Wait til your kids start making toy-sized zip-lines for their creations all over your house!

GRADES 2-4  Mondays 3:30-4:30pm

Session 1:Robotics 1: Sept 9, 16, 23, 30, Oct 7, 14, 21

Session 2: Robotics 2: Oct 28, Nov 4, 18, 25, Dec 2, 9, 16

LEGO ROBOTICS 1

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of exploration: robotics, programming, logic.

Staffing: 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60 min meetings, once per week  $120 per student,  Min 11/ max 12 students.

This is our core class, where beginners learn to build and program LEGO® robots using LEGO® Education's award-winning WeDo robotics and programming software. Students follow step-by-step onscreen instructions to build their robots and a suggested program. Students who are ready develop more complicated programs involving motion or tilt sensors. In the final class, we take off the training wheels and challenge students to design and build and program bots that can achieve a certain task.

Lego Robotics 2 builds on Lego Robotics 1 with new and more complex projects.  The directions will not be as detailed step-by-step and the kids will be challenged to explore and use their imagination to build robots after starting with our basic building and programming instructions to get them started.

*Prerequisite: Lego Robotics 1

GRADES 4-5  Mondays 3:30-4:30pm

Session 1: Challenge 1: Sept 9, 16, 23, 30, Oct 7, 14, 21

Session 2: Challenge 2: Oct 28, Nov 4, 18, 25, Dec 2, 9, 16

ROBO CHALLENGE 1

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of exploration: robotics, programming, logic.

Staffing: 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60 min meetings, once per week  $125 per student,  Min 11/ max 12 students.

Took our LEGO® Robotics class and want more? And more of a challenge? Or are you in 4th or 5th grade, ready to launch into robotics with no previous experience? This class is for you. Instead of working with step-by-step building directions and sample programs, we’ll start each class with a programming challenge set by our instructors. Then we’ll use LEGO® robotics kits to design bots to go with our programs. We’ll build catapults, crash-avoidance vehicles, hexbug nano catchers and more!

Robo Challenge 2 builds on what we learned in Robo Challenge 1 with new, more challenging projects!  Some of the robots we’ll build include:  conveyor belts and a marble soccer game! *Prerequisite: Robo Challenge 1
